Here are a number of drawings, ranging from very loose quick pencils, to more finished sketches. Wih every illustration I have done, and I think its over 4,000 jobs now, I usually do one or 2 roughs, then one or 2 more developed pencils or grayscale sketches. Recently, I scan in the pencil and add a gray layer, then erase back to white via layer masking, so it gives a more tonal, even photographic look, which some clients like.

Above, an older but typical drawing I used to shoot a slide from and then project onto canvas or panel. If I tried to draw direcly onto the board or canvas, it would be a laborious process and take considerably longer. Canvas is not nearly as receptive as paper for pencil drawings like this, so its much more efficient to transfer the drawing. Another method is to take a sheet of tracing paper and rub the back with graphite or charcoal, smear it with bestine and let it dry, then use that as a transfer sheet between the canvas or panel and the drawing. I usually toss drawings like this because they are of no real use to me, its the finished art that I am after.
